Did You Know? Albinism Increases Skin Cancer Risk by 1,000-Fold
The absence of melanin significantly increases the risk of developing skin cancer due to heightened exposure to intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
For individuals with albinism, this risk is particularly pronounced, necessitating the consistent use of sunscreen lotions and protective clothing to safeguard their skin.
Albinos, due to the lack melanin, face a 1,000-fold higher risk of developing skin cancer compared to the general African population.
In the southern region of Malawi, people with albinism often reside in remote areas, and lack access to sunscreen lotions and protective clothing, leaving them vulnerable to the effects of skin cancer.
Driven by his passion for advocating for people with albinism in Malawi, Ambassador Azaria Tendayi, a 2022 FALA WINNER, and his team took action.
They distributed over 400 bottles of sunscreen lotions, and other essential relief materials; alongside 300 items of protective clothing to hospitals and villages like Linrangwe, Lunzu, Chileka and Kwalundu ensuring free access for individuals with albinism in Malawi.
